The books should not be stored in direct contact with the walnut slipcase. Be sure to use the black paperboard slipcase, which is designed to fit into the walnut slipcase, as a buffer. This protects the bookcloth from the abrasive, oily wood and keeps the books snugly encased to guard against dust, UV light, and moisture.
Care
The walnut box is designed for light handling in a stable environment and thus does not require a protective finish. Handle the slipcase with a measure of care, but don’t be afraid to allow it to develop character over time, marked by natural wear, scuffs, and scratches.
Initially, the surface of the slipcase may have a dusty, matte appearance. With regular use, the natural oils from the wood will surface, gradually developing a patina and making the wood grain more pronounced.
For those who prefer a darker, more defined grain appearance akin to that of a traditional stain, we suggest applying a natural walnut finishing oil or a beeswax furniture polish. Use a lint-free cloth or a stain pad for application. (For the oil finish, Chalk Mountain Slow-dry Walnut Finishing Oil is our top recommendation. For the beeswax finish, we recommend using Daddy Van’s All Natural Unscented.)
